Schumann : Album für die Jugend, *** Op.68 No.30
After Robert Schumann's (1810-56) dream to become a virtuoso pianist was brought to a swift end by a hand injury, he poured his musical energy into composing, writing a large number of pieces for piano.
He wrote the Album für die Jugend (Album for the Young) for his three daughters to play, but it also includes pieces 'für Erwachsenere' (for older people), of which this is one example selected here.
The inner parts carry a good deal of the musical meaning in this piece; it is easy to imagine it as chamber music with the different players responding to one another as the lines weave in and out.

The Consolations (German: Tröstungen) are a set of six solo piano works by Franz Liszt. The compositions take the musical style of Nocturnes with each having its own distinctive style. Each Consolation is composed in either the key of E major or D♭ major. E major is a key regularly used by Liszt for religious themes. There exist two versions of the Consolations. The first (S.171a) was composed by Liszt between 1844 and 1849 and published in 1992 by G. Henle Verlag. The second (S.172) was composed between 1849 and 1850 and published in 1850 by Breitkopf & Härtel, containing the familiar Consolation No. 3, Lento placido, in D♭ major. This consolation fits its name very well, as it emits a feeling of comfort.
